What noein (νοεῖν) means: Greek did not use one word for thinking
νοεῖν is not step-by-step reasoning (διάνοια) but the grasp that takes a thing in at once. Plato placed it at the top of knowledge; Aristotle called it the activity of the intellect. Why WorldWideSomething gave the name to an AI built without outside knowledge.
Noein comes from the Greek verb νοεῖν, the present active infinitive of νοέω (noeō). It is usually translated as to think, but the Greek word is narrower than the English one. It does not mean working through something one step at a time. It means taking in what is in front of you and grasping, at once, what it is.
Greek did not bundle all of this into a single verb. λογίζεσθαι (logizesthai) is to count and calculate. διάνοια (dianoia) is reasoning that moves from premise to conclusion one rung at a time. νοεῖν skips the staircase. In Homer the verb often means to see and notice: to look at something and know what it is in the same instant.
“τὸ γὰρ αὐτὸ νοεῖν ἐστίν τε καὶ εἶναι — for thinking and being are the same. Parmenides, fragment 3”
Plato put νόησις (noēsis) at the top of the divided line in the Republic, above sense perception, opinion (δόξα) and dianoia. Perception and opinion deal in shadows, dianoia calculates from assumptions it does not question, and only noēsis reaches the form itself without leaning on an assumption. Two people can look at the same thing and still be on different rungs.
Aristotle attached the word to the moment a human being is most fully human. In De Anima, νοεῖν is the activity of νοῦς (nous, intellect); in Metaphysics XII he describes divine thought as νόησις νοήσεως, thinking about thinking, thought that takes nothing else as material and has only itself as its object.
Parmenides put it more bluntly: τὸ γὰρ αὐτὸ νοεῖν ἐστίν τε καὶ εἶναι, for thinking and being are the same (fragment 3). What is not cannot be the object of νοεῖν. You cannot use the verb for something invented.
The root is still with us. νόος and νοῦς give English noetic and noosphere, and παράνοια (paranoia) is literally a mind gone off to one side. The transliteration is noein, and the circumflex sits on the ει because νοεῖν is a contraction of νοέειν.
WorldWideSomething (전세계무언가) gave the name to a product for one reason. Noein is designed without outside knowledge: no internet, no world knowledge loaded in advance. Exactly one thing is pre-trained, counselling psychology, and everything else it learns only from the person it talks to. There is no material in there to invent from.
The name and the design point the same way. Not a system that stockpiles what it knows and picks an answer out of the pile, but one that follows how a single person thinks closely enough to notice what that person is actually asking. That is the work the Greeks called νοεῖν.
WorldWideSomething studies the psychology of people through HCI and AI and designs apps out of what it finds. Its founder, Dan Kim (김대은), researches Human-AI Interaction (HAI) and Human-Centered AI (HCAI) at the School of Information Convergence, Kwangwoon University. The company takes no outsourcing and no agency work.
Noein is not released yet. The concept and the design are written out on the Noein page of the company site.
